Manufacturing plant – Kempton Park

BACK GROUND OF CASE:

Information was received that a manufacturing plant was manufacturing infringing and counterfeit cassettes, CD-R's and DVD-R's. A test purchase was set up for a substantial volume of goods and was positive. The premises was raided by the Organised Crime Unit of the Police and 3 suspects were arrested.

The suspects were brought before court and the cases against 2 were withdrawn as they were only workers. Bail was set in the amount of R20 000 for the main suspect on condition that he pays the money, report once a week at his local Police Station and hand in his passport.

ESTIMATED STREET VALUE: R388 937-00* * = 2006

RESULT OF CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS:

The accused has been sentenced to a fine of R90 000-00 or 3 years imprisonment of which R60 000-00 or 2 years have been suspended for 5 years. The value of the number of equipment seized was taken into account by the court.
