After numerous complaints were received concerning music piracy in the Northern Cape, Operation Fong Kong was initiated. The operation was conducted by the RiSA Anti-Piracy Unit together with Kimberley-based members of the Commercial Crime Unit of the South African Police Service, and members of De Aar's Crime Intelligence Unit of the Police. The South African National Defence Force also supplied manpower for the raids. 11 Suspicious premises in 3 different towns (Colesberg, Hopetown and De Aar) were identified and test purchases done. On the 7th of September 10 simultaneous raids were conducted and 10 suspects arrested for infringement of copyright. Machinery and equipment to copy music as well as computers were found – among these being a CD-R/DVD-R stack duplicator (burner) used for copying of music CD's and DVD's. Although one of the country's more remote areas, the premises raided were substantive, proving that music piracy extends into the furtherest reaches of the Republic. The publicity generated by the operation in the region (it received front page coverage in several regional newspapers) led to an increase in calls reporting similar operations in the Northern Cape. With the Anti-Piracy Unit's commitment to confidentiality, this has resulted in yet further blows against the proliferation of counterfeit product in the region. This was a good example of how effective it is when all enforcement agencies and government forces work together. |
