BACK GROUND OF CASE:

On June 16th 2005 - in an initiative reported on several television news programmes - a joint raid was conducted by the Organised Crime Unit, Vaalrand and the Anti-Piracy Unit of RiSA in Meyerton on a suspected cassette manufacturing plant. During a search of the small holding a significant volume of counterfeit cassettes and equipment used to make them was found. Inlays were even found hidden in the roof of the premises. The MTN SAMA 11 Nominees Album was also found among the counterfeit cassettes as well as approximately 500 printed inlays and printing plates of this album.

4 Suspects were arrested and detained on charges of copyright infringement.

  • 12 600 blank cassettes
  • ± 45 000 printed inlays
  • 3 cassette dubbing machines
  • 289 printing plates
  • 1 printing plant (which included a cassette printing machine, compressor, ink and paper, silk screens, negatives, spares, etc)
  • 1 laptop
  • 83 master cassettes
ESTIMATED STREET VALUE: R156 294-00
RESULT OF CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS:

An Admission of Guilt fine in the amount of R50 000-00 was paid to the court on the 28th of June 2005.
